Product Description
They want a backpack like mom or dad's so get them this little trekker that has the Deuter quality and functionality built into a young discoverer's proportions. Modeled after the adult size Deuter Aircontact trekking packs, the Fox 30 is fully featured for the kids!Deuter Kid's Fox 40 Backpack Review
This is a great pack for kids wanting to go on real backpacking adventures. The quality is very good. The features are in line with what you'd expect to see on mid-range adult packs. This was bought for a long and lean 7-year old boy who is 50" tall (90th percentile) and 47 pounds (75th percentile). His fitted shoulder harness adjustment leaves 4" of growing room. He tried on the Fox 30 but the the proper adjustment only left 2" for growth. Although the Fox 40 could be lowered another 1" for a shorter kid, I recommend the Fox 30 because the overall bulk of this one would be out of proportion to their size.
Be careful! The size and design of this pack can probably hold and support the claimed 33 pounds of gear so it's very easy to overload a small kid. Pediatricians warn the limit for a backpack is of 20% of a child's body weight. More than that can damage their growth plates. That's about 9.5 pounds for a big 7-year old - and the pack is already 2-1/2 pounds of that limit. An 8-year should never be loaded up with 18 pounds unless he's over 90 pounds (that's 50th percentile for a 12 year old).
Keep it light and the trail short and you'll have a happy hiking buddy with a life long love for backpacking!
