Flexcut CARVIN' JACK RIGHT HAND Review
Summary: One would be much better served - and safer - investing in separate tools than to risk serious injury with this all-in-one device. The FlexCut 5pc Travel Set plus a Cutting Knife can all fit in a tool roll and give you a much safer experience.
I have a large number of handled and unhandled FlexCut carving tools, and I'm really happy with all of them. I wanted to get this tool to be more "portable" and be able to carve when the mood hit me, without having to drag out my larger case of tools. This tool, while it has an interesting assortment of profiles and could be useful, fails to fill the need because the mechanism for keeping the tools together is fraught with problems. The embossed nail nicks in the blades are tiny, and situated very close to the hinge, and require an incredible amount of force to move. My nails have broken before they actually moved the blade, and this forces me to resort to dangerous moves to get the blade I want. In use, the hinges drag the other blades along with so it's impossible to pull out just one blade without having to push the others back. These blades are in shapes that make it hard to push one without nicking oneself on the others. Since this is a FlexCut tool of legendary sharpness the nicks are deep, but at least a clean cut heals quickly.
By FlexCut's own admission it's easy to have the tools push further into the handle, thus defeating the locking mechanism. Their advice in the owner's manual is to somehow "not push the blades [...] any deeper into the handle", but they don't tell how to do this: any sort of rotation of the blade in use pushes in the others on that same hinge. Once pushed into the handle, I cannot get them out without resorting to some other tool, and this makes it tough to call this portable if I have to carry around a separate tool just to get the blades out. Last, once the blades are all seated make sure that none of them are sticking out, even a little, or you could slice yourself as you insert or remove it from its case.
Yours in safe and happy carving.
