I am a beginner taking skating lessons and as a clumsy beginner, am the only one in my class that had fallen on my butt a few times. The first fall left was so traumatic, it left huge divet in the ice. My tailbone was sore for a week and my shoulder still hurts from the jarring charlie brown fall. Fall number two took out my knee with a huge black and blue bruise. Not to be deterred, I went out in search of some protection. After reading a few reviews on different pad protection, I ended up purchasing the Crash Pad 2600 shorts from a different vendor outside of Amazon. The padding is 1/2 inch thick and it's in ALL the right places - wrap around pieces that covers the butt area - specifically where the back pockets of your jeans are is where the padding extends to. The tail bone padding is also very cush. The padding that wraps up towards the front of the thigh would be good protection for roller derby as I think that is the main purpose of these pads.
Sure enough on the first day I used them, they paid for themselves two-fold. I fell on my butt big time, however this time around I didn't feel the pain when my a** hitting that ice. The cushion absorbed the huge fall.
The shorts are bulky, but it is really not that noticeable under a loose pair of jeans. These shorts do run small (snuuuug), so size accordingly. I wear compression shorts underneath the pads because the two smaller pads on the lower rear thighs rubs up something fierce with every step, so the compression shorts keeps me sane.
I highly recommend this to anyone looking for padding to protect from falls on the ice or even snow boarding.
