Daiwa COASTAl 4000 Saltwater Spinning Reel Review

Daiwa has made a name for themselves in manufacturing spinning reels that cover a wide spectrum in regard to the degree of quality and corresponding price points. The Daiwa Coastal was put through the paces as I fished with it 3 to 4 days of every 7 day week. Price wise, the Coastal costs considerably less than the equivalent from a competing manufacturer. It is on par with the Shimano Stradic 3000FI, 3000FJ, 4000FI, or 4000FJ. It's comparable to the Penn's Battle series spinning reels. It comes very close, if not equal, to Quantum's Smoke series. However, it costs anywhere from $40.00 to close to $100.00 less. I only fished with this reel in saltwater. On more than one occasion, the reel was unintentionally submerged while wade fishing. To say I'm hard on my equipment would risk suggesting that I don't take care of it. I buy high quality gear and diligently maintain it. Prior to owning this Daiwa Coastal, I had been partial to Shimano and Fin-Nor. For larger spinning reels, I favored Penn. The Daiwa Coastal isn't priced nearly as high as some of Daiwa's saltwater reels, yet it delivers the same degree of fighting power from a water proof drag, perfectly designed large diameter spool, over-sized line roller, and solid gears housed inside a non-flexing metal body. It's not the lightest reel, but it's far from the heaviest. It doesn't have a lot of flashy coloring. Besides the spool, you don't see much highly polished metal surfaces. However, it's still a great looking reel, however understated it may be. The fish don't know what you're using, but you can be sure they'll know they've been caught. I can't think of something reason not to rely on Daiwa's Coastal series.
